Australian marine wildlife experts are trying to save about 140 pufferfish that washed ashore in the southern part of Western Australia on Wednesday. Another 26 cetaceans have already died, Reuters reported.

The whales were stranded in Toby Bay in Geographe Bay, near the town of Dunsborough in the south west of the state. The area is a popular tourist spot and lies about 240 kilometers from the state capital of Perth.

“According to our information, four pods of baleen whales, in which there were about 160 individuals, were stranded on the shoal. They occupy about 500 meters. Unfortunately, the 26 cetaceans that were washed up to the beach have already died,” said the spokesperson of the Ministry of Biodiversity, Nature Conservation and Attractions in a statement Western Australia.

“A team of experienced experts, including conservationists, marine scientists and veterinarians, is already on the scene, or on the way there,” added the spokesman, adding that based on experience from previous similar events, it will probably be necessary to euthanize animals stranded on the beach, as this is the most humane way.

In July last year, more than 50 pufferfish died after being stranded on a remote beach in Western Australia. This species of cetacean is known for its strong social bonds. Therefore, when one of them gets into trouble and runs aground, others often follow.
