European politicians have previously compared it to drug addiction, albeit only legal ones so far. When compared to the Chinese social network TikTok, cigarettes proved to be the most effective for them. They are freely available but highly addictive and can cause serious health problems.
No European country has yet implemented a cigarette ban, but unlike the United States, even TikTok is far from doing so in Europe.
But the US House of Representatives has already taken the first step when it passed a law over the weekend threatening to ban TikTok if the operator of its “western” version (unavailable in China) does not sell it.
The European Union finally joined this week. Proposals to kick TikTok out of the EU have been falling for years, but the last straw for the Union is apparently a new app called TikTok Lite, which experts say could cause young people to become even more addicted to the increasingly popular social network.
Already last year, European institutions advised employees to uninstall TikTok from their devices. In this case it was about security threats, but most recently the Union is hindered by threats to the health of young people in particular.
