Police on the campus of Boston’s Northeastern University on Saturday morning local time detained about 100 people at a pro-Palestinian demonstration and began clearing a tent camp the protesters had set up there. The university reported about it on the network https://twitter.com/Northeastern/status/1784192555670020555. The student demonstration on campus began two days ago, according to the university’s statement, but the site was infiltrated by “professional organizers” who have no ties to the university, according to the school.

On Friday night, according to a statement from the school, anti-Semitic remarks were made at the protest. “We cannot tolerate such hate on our campus,” the university said.

NPR’s Tori Bedford on the network https://twitter.com/Tori_Bedford/status/1784196633648885993 she stated that she actually heard “kill the Jews” at the demonstration. But according to her, it came from someone who was holding an Israeli flag. “Apparently it was a provocative joke in response to a group chanting pro-Palestinian slogans,” she said, adding that she did not know if the university was referring to this particular case. At the same time she shared https://twitter.com/Tori_Bedford/status/1784222169746063773on which this statement is heard.

Police detained about 100 people while clearing the tent camp, according to the school. Students who produced a valid university ID have been dismissed and will be disciplined by the school, but will not take legal action. The officers, on the other hand, arrested persons who refused to identify themselves.

American universities have been the scene of protests since the very beginning of the war in the Gaza Strip last October, following a terrorist attack by the Hamas movement on Israel. But in recent days, tensions have escalated when the administration of Columbia University in New York called the police on its students who were camping in the middle of the Manhattan campus. Similar protest camps have sprung up across the country, and the protests are also attracting outside activists, who continue to inflame passions, according to media reports.

The university demonstrations reflect the strong disapproval of many young Americans over the way Israel is conducting its offensive against Hamas in the Gaza Strip. The protesting students are demanding that the schools cut off business ties and investments that are in any way connected to Israel, and are calling for an end to the killing of Palestinian civilians.
