“Some lost their lives trying to cross a mountain river or cross mountains,” Demchenko said. “A total of about 30 people have died trying to cross the border illegally since the start of the full-scale invasion.”

Ukrainian men between the ages of 18 and 60 are not allowed to leave the country, with exceptions, as they may be mobilized under Ukrainian martial law. Ukraine’s state border service said in a statement on social media on Monday that 24 men had died trying to cross the Tisza river on the Ukrainian-Romanian border alone.

Demchenko said that since the beginning of the war, border guards have discovered about 450 criminal groups that tried to smuggle people across the border. “Attempts to cross the border illegally happen every day,” he said.

“Most of them take place outside the border crossings on the borders with Moldova and Romania. We recorded the largest number of attempts with forged documents at the border with Poland,” added Demchenko.

In April, Demchenko said on Ukrainian state television that an average of about ten men are detained every day trying to leave Ukraine illegally.

Last week, Ukraine suspended consular services for its male citizens of military age until May 18. At the same time, she criticized Ukrainians living abroad, who, according to Kyiv, expect help from the state without helping it in the fight for survival in the war against the Russian aggressor.

In a report last November based on data from Romania, Moldova, Poland, Hungary and Slovakia on illegal border crossings, the BBC said nearly 20,000 men had fled Ukraine to avoid conscription since the war began.
