We will restore the labor camps, suggests the Siberian deputy

--

“What do you think, should we solve the issue of the creation of labor camps?” the deputy turned to other deputies. She added the reason: “There are a lot of people who simply do not want to do, but use state support. Vermin, I’m sorry, they’re like worms on our bodies.’

The Russian server NGS pointed out that she may not have acted only as a member of parliament, but as the head of the development group Karjeroupraleniye, which builds residential buildings in and around Tomsk. It completed 11,500 square meters of living space in the first quarter, which is the most in the area.

This follows from her words: “There are no concrete workers, welders or electricians on the construction site. There are few people, especially in winter, when the concrete has to be heated. And we have six months of winter. Some drastic measures need to be taken. They are not people, we will miss them even more tomorrow.”

According to the Sibir Realii server associated with Free Europe, Karjeroupraleniye’s turnover fell from 175 million to 148.5 million rubles in 2023. Even in 2021, it had a profit of 54 million rubles, last year it suffered a loss of 587,000 rubles.

The NGS server contacted Sobkaňuková with a request for an explanation due to her statement, which surprised even other MPs, but she did not respond. She did not find support for her words even among her colleagues, some even laughed at her, as it appears in the video.

There are no people in the labor market

However, avoiding work is not the main problem, the NGS said. There is simply no free labor force not only in the Tomsk region, but also elsewhere. This follows from a report from the governor’s office for social policy, Oksana Gruznychová.

According to her, 3,100 people are registered at the labor office, but not all of them are suitable for heavy construction work, as most of them are women. She added that it is advantageous to be registered at the office even for men who have to pay alimony. They make up about a fifth of those registered.

The scientific director of the Institute of Regional Problems, Dmitry Zhuravlyov, rejected her idea. Forced labor may seem like a simple solution, but in reality it is no solution.

The whole of Uzbekistan would have to be brought in

“Such things were proposed by Leo Trotsky already in the twenties. It is nothing new, just a forgotten old thing, but if it is implemented, it will mean that the society has changed radically and got rid of such ‘useless’ things like the constitution. A neo-slavery system will start,” said Zhuravlyov.

He pointed out that many people simply cannot do such work, but added that manual work is no longer popular not only among Moscow’s youth, but no longer attracts anyone at all.

Migrant workers from Central Asian countries will not solve the problem either, because, according to this expert, it would not be enough to bring all of Uzbekistan.

The situation is more complicated in Siberia than in centers like Moscow, because it is there, as in other poor regions, that more men are being recruited into the army, which is conducting an offensive war in Ukraine. These conscripts are then absent from the labor market.
