According to experts, the probability of having identical quadruplets is one in 15 million. Worldwide, doctors register only 72 cases in history when such a “quartet” was born. Now the American Mercedes Sandhu has also joined this select group.

Her girls, weighing 1.2 to 1.4 kilograms, are currently in the intensive care unit of the Children’s Clinic in Houston, breathing with the help of machines and receiving artificial nutrition. They will probably look at home only in July. Two brothers, three-year-old Luke and eighteen-month-old Aaron, are waiting for them there.

Mercedes’ third pregnancy was a surprise. “We didn’t try very hard, but we were excited. We loved the idea of giving our boys siblings,” she told Today.com. “But when we found out there were four…Holy goodness!,” she added.

She was only seven weeks pregnant when four small balls appeared on the ultrasound screen. “First I laughed, then I cried. I was a little hysterical,” admitted Mrs. Mercedes.

When she announced this to her husband Jonathan, with whom she will celebrate her fifth wedding anniversary on May 18, he did not want to believe her. “He kept saying, ‘Are you serious?'” the mother of six recalled.

Her pregnancy was high-risk for the children and herself, so both parents took a deep breath after the birth. “I cried with happiness in the hall. I thought to myself, everyone is safe, we made it,” Jonathan described his feelings.
