Whoever prevents the construction of a super-modern Saudi Arabian technological city can be killed – such an order, according to the BBC, has been issued by the authorities of Saudi Arabia. According to the British public broadcaster, the order concerns the construction of a futuristic project called Neom. It is the flagship of the modernization of Saudi Arabia according to the project of Crown Prince Muhammad bin Salman.

The order was allegedly received by the Saudi security forces in April 2020 and they also implemented it. During the clearing of one of the villages that stand in the way of the super-modern city, according to information from the BBC, they even shot one man.

Abdar-Rahím Huwajtí protested the displacement and shared videos about it on social media. For example, he did not let officials value his property. He was then allegedly shot by security forces during forced displacement.

Authorities say it was in self-defense after he started shooting at them. Another 47 villagers ended up behind bars – some for also protesting the eviction, others for speaking publicly about Huwajti’s death.

The BBC bases the accusations on the testimony of the former colonel of the Saudi security forces, Rabih al-Anisi. He is said to have received the order, but withdrew from the operation due to fictitious health reasons and has been living in exile in the United Kingdom for a year.

The BBC verified the information using satellite images, information from the United Nations and the AlQst organization, which is involved in the protection of human rights in Saudi Arabia. A source familiar with the procedures of the Saudi services confirmed that the information corresponds to the procedures.

Super modern project

The project for which the security forces received this order is called Neom, and it is supposed to be a super-modern ecological project centered on a city called The Line. It is supposed to be 170 kilometers long and only 200 meters wide.

The Line is to be a completely emission-free city that uses only renewable resources. It was supposed to be built in an area that the authorities described as completely barren, but the Huwajta tribe lives there and at least three villages stand in its way.

The project is part of Vision 2030 – modernization of the oil monarchy, rebuilding its economy from dependence on oil exports to the development of modern technologies. The Neom project is already being built by Western companies, but the BBC gives an example of several companies that withdrew from the project because they did not like the practices of the Saudi authorities.
