The new year brought some relief in terms of food prices. The amounts issued for very basic needs have at least stopped growing, despite the fact that stores threatened to increase them further. In the end, they flinched out of fear of public pressure.

But the price increase is still in the air, and it can be expected that supermarkets such as Kaufland, Lidl, Penny or Billy will use the first opportunity that comes their way to continue the stunt in the name of inflated food prices.

Unfortunately, there are also other news that will not make people happy. Slowly but surely, the window when it was worthwhile to go shopping in Poland is closing. That is, if it has not already closed definitively. It is true that the koruna weakened sharply against the zloty and the local government abolished zero VAT on food. As a result, food has become quite expensive there as well.

After all, there are still working alternatives that it would be a shame not to use. “I don’t go shopping anywhere else. Here I can save 15 thousand crowns per month for our household,” recounts Mrs. Tereza and explains the reason. “There is a difference when you go to Alberta and leave CZK 3,000 there for a big purchase, and here it will cost you CZK 800 when it goes wrong.

Clear choice

He’s referring to the Cheapest Foods store, but he says it’s similar in all these stores. They are called discounts and they are growing like mushrooms after the rain in the Czech Republic. Today they are almost in every small town.

Their magic lies in the fact that they sell goods at a discount of up to 90%, the only drawback of which is the approaching expiration date. It’s often not even out of date, and if it is, it’s usually fine. In addition, it often comes from Western countries such as France or Germany, so these are products that you cannot normally buy here.

Customers usually have a similar experience. “I used to refuse to go there because I won’t buy expired food. But the big chains made me do it. And you know what? I don’t regret it at all, because I will buy here not only cheaper, but many times better quality,” Mrs. Teresa is clear.
