Pop star Lady Gaga is back. He’s preparing for a jazz piano tour, a movie premiere, and battling fibromyalgia

Real name Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta gained worldwide fame in 2008 after the release of her debut album The Fame with hits such as Just Dance and Poker Face. Her other albums were also commercially very successful, for example the hits Alejandro, Bad Romance or Born This Way. For me personally, I recommend listening to the little-known song Government Hooker, which I consider to be one of the best electropop things of all time (by the way, the male voice in the song belongs to her bodyguard).

By the way, do you know how her pen name came about? When she dated record producer Rob Fusari in 2006, he compared her vocals to Queen frontman Freddie Mercury. One of the hits of this group, Radio Gaga, gave birth to part of the pseudonym. The singer added Lady after a text message, where the phrase Radio Gaga was mistakenly corrected to Lady. She liked it, she felt it was the right thing and Lady Gaga was born.

The singer gradually became one of the highest-grossing female artists of all time and a thirteen-time winner of Grammy awards. Her road to fame was long, complicated and well-deserved, this is no talent contest winner shot to the top just by the wayside. She was born in 1986 in New York to a family with Italian roots, she played the piano from the age of four and composed her first compositions at the age of thirteen. She subsequently graduated from the Lee Strasberg Theater and Film Institute and did not graduate from the Tisch School of the Arts, from which she dropped out in her sophomore year to pursue a full-time career in music. She formed a band called the Stefani Germanotta Band, with which she performed in New York clubs. She also built her reputation as a lyricist, initially writing for other big stars such as Beyoncé, Britney Spears or Jennifer Lopez. Her work was largely influenced by David Bowie, Michael Jackson, Madonna or the group Queen. When she wrote the song Just Dance one day literally on her knees and with a hangover in a few minutes, it became a hit that catapulted her to the top of the world.

At first, she built her success on a thought-out shocking image, with which her younger sister Natali, well-versed in the fashion industry, helped her. Her quirky and crazy costume creations, complete with masks, wigs, crazy headbands and headgear, culminated at the 2010 MTV Awards, where she appeared in a dress and shoes made of raw meat. It wasn’t just a fashion fad – Gaga was protesting the US law that did not allow homosexuals to serve in the US military if they publicly declared their orientation. In the same year, Gaga also performed in Prague as part of The Fame Monster tour, which promoted her re-released first album with eight new songs. It is necessary to add my personal experience of the concert, which unfortunately was not very successful, signs of gradation were interrupted by long pauses with the reconstruction of the stage, and from time to time there was a collective booing and shouting from the corridors for Gaga to return the entrance fee.

After a few more years of the pop machine, the singer was in dire need of a change, as fame and a frenetic lifestyle were draining her and causing her considerable psychological difficulties close to suicidal thoughts. At the time, she was at the height of her popularity and was literally crumbling beneath her.

I couldn’t shop in peace. Immediately someone came and took pictures of me. I felt total panic, I felt that I was an object, not a person. When I was having dinner with my friends and someone approached the table, everything started spinning around me. It was a huge burden. I saw no point in my continued existence. I hated myself. I was completely exhausted. I wondered if I really needed this life if I couldn’t be a normal person. For several years, my relatives watched me constantly to make sure I was safe, that I wouldn’t hurt myself.

Musically and in terms of self-presentation, she completely slowed down, took a detour and devoted herself to more intimate jazz work in collaboration with the American singer Tony Bennett. They released the successful album Cheek To Cheek and toured Europe and North America.

In 2016, her health problems became fully apparent, but they appeared a few years ago. After the release of the album, Joanne had to cancel more than half of the concerts as part of the promotional tour. She suffered from severe muscle and joint pain, and logically could not complete the concert schedule.

Her disease is called fibromyalgia – it is a painful syndrome of the musculoskeletal system, which often includes other symptoms, such as weakness, fatigue, sleep disorders or psychological problems. Treatment consists of the administration of analgesics, antiepileptics and antidepressants and is combined with ergotherapy, rehabilitation and psychotherapies. It affects 3–10% of people, and the majority of patients are middle-aged women. Gaga caught the disease at a young age. In 2017, a Netflix documentary was released, which charts the creation of the Joanne album, Gaga’s performance at the Superbowl, and also reveals her privacy and described health problems.

In 2019, Gaga entered the cosmetics business and founded her cruelty-free vegan brand HAUS LABS BY LADY GAGA, which currently works with partner Sephora.

At the turn of the decade, covid also affected her life and caused the release of a new, sixth album in the series to be postponed. Only in 2022 could she release the Chromatica album (she put all her sorrows, depression and health problems into it) and go on a worldwide string of concerts. Then, at least for us Europeans, she disappeared a little from sight and this year she is “poking out her horns” again. In Las Vegas, she will once again hold a series of more intimate concerts in a jazz setting, accompanied by the piano, which, by the way, she plays perfectly herself, and the premiere of the movie Joker: Folie à Deux, where she plays the main female role of Harley Quinn alongside Joaquin Phoenix, is coming in the fall.

It is far from her first prominent role. Gaga has been acting successfully for many years. Among her most notable acting credits are undoubtedly the films A Star Is Born (2018) and The Gucci Clan (2021) and the series American Horror Story (2016). All these productions won many awards, including the highest one – the Oscar.

As for the new album, the singer has not announced any date yet, but she has shared new music recordings on her Instagram, hinting that she is working on a new album. In which direction the new album will go, whether again in some monstrous pop form, or in a more intimate direction as in the past, we will be surprised.
