The world is struggling with the lack of eggs, how is the Czech Republic doing? Economists warn that prices will rise

--

Norway’s egg shortage has caused panic buying. Egg supply shortages have been going on since last year, so people are making bulk purchases. There are concerns ahead of the approaching Easter, as the holiday is very demanding on the demand for eggs. However, Czech consumers do not have to worry about outages. They are even sold cheaper in domestic stores than a year ago. But according to economists, there is a risk that the price of eggs will increase just before Easter.

Although Norway is a rich country due to oil production, it faces a shortage of some types of food. According to the Austrian website Der Standard, it refers to eggs. There is a shortage of them in supermarkets there and panic is spreading among consumers. One of the food companies, Nortura, warns that people should not pre-stock eggs and thus reduce demand.

Supermarkets also warn against bulk purchases. “Due to high demand, eggs may occasionally sell out. Our suppliers supply eggs on an ongoing basis, however shortages may occur. We apologize for the inconvenience caused to customers,” the Kiwi chain announces, for example.

The shortage has been going on since last summer. With this, the dissatisfaction of business chains and suppliers is also growing. “It’s not like there’s a complete shortage. But in general, there are not enough eggs on the market to cover the high demand. We are afraid that some types may be sold out for a short time,” Coop Norway spokesperson Harald Kristiansen told the server.

The approaching Easter will be a big test. Eggs are in high demand during this holiday and an increased demand can be expected. “With secured imports and various measures, we can guarantee that Norwegian eggs will be available on the food market by Easter. But that’s assuming people don’t start hoarding eggs. This could make the whole situation worse,” said Nortura spokeswoman Matilda Aronsson.

Czechs have enough eggs, they even make them cheaper

And what is the situation in the Czech Republic? Czech consumers do not have to worry about a shortage of eggs. They can even boast that the price of eggs fell by almost a quarter year-on-year. After Christmas, Easter is the second strongest shopping holiday. The chains are therefore preparing special discount events, the president of the Trade and Tourism Association Tomáš Prouza told CNN Prima NEWS.

According to the chief economist of Trinity Bank Lukáš Kovanda, the Czechs should be on their guard. Just before Easter, the price of eggs may increase. “It cannot be ruled out. Before Easter, traders regularly raise prices. They could also tell themselves that people are fed up with the discounting in the first weeks of this year and will turn it around a bit,” said Kovanda.
