Dust from the Sahara in the air over the weekend was manifested by increased cloudiness, “haze” and increased concentrations of dust particles known as PM10, despite good dispersal conditions. In Olomouc, by the evening of Sunday, March 31, concentrations did not reach such values as in Ostrava, where a smog situation has been declared since Saturday.

At some stations in the Olomouc Region, for example in Olomouc or Hranice, the concentrations of airborne dust rose above 100 micrograms per cubic meter in the afternoon.
“This is despite good dispersal conditions. The situation will be analyzed in detail after it subsides,” said meteorologist Marie Glofáková from the Ostrava forecasting department of the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute (ČHMÚ).
From Saturday, dry, desert air flowed into the Czech Republic. “If we look at the vertical profile of the atmosphere, the air is really very dry, full of Saharan dust,” described the meteorologist.

However, the situation should improve during Monday. The air will clear in the afternoon. “We’ll be dealing with Saharan dust for a while yet, when concentrations will be generally elevated. In the course of tomorrow, we expect a cold front to pass from the west and we expect the situation to improve,” the meteorologist said on Sunday evening.
The presence of dust in the air, even though the situation in the Olomouc Region was more favorable than in Bohemia or Ostrava, also affected the afternoon maximum temperatures on the weekend.
Up to 23°C! Gardens and ice cream makers in Olomouc are getting ready for summer Easter
In Olomouc, Saturday’s maximum was 21.3 degrees Celsius. “Then 21.8 degrees on Sunday. For the sake of interest – the warmest station on Sunday in the Olomouc region was Přerov, where we measured 22.4 degrees Celsius,” added Marie Glofáková.
On Easter Monday, the maximum in the Olomouc lowlands will reach 23 degrees. It will be cloudy, even cloudy, later in the afternoon and in the evening there will be rain or showers in most areas, occasionally thunderstorms.
It will be noticeably colder on Tuesday. The highest daily temperatures in Olomouc will reach a maximum of 15 degrees.
