According to information from CNN Prima NEWS, a difficult-to-understand incident took place in Prague’s Bulovka University Hospital on Monday. The staff allegedly confused the patients and a healthy woman miscarried as a result. The unwanted event was confirmed to CNN Prima NEWS by the press spokesperson of the hospital, Eva Stolejda Libigerová.

It was supposed to be two foreign women who live permanently in the Czech Republic. The pregnant woman went for a routine check-up, while the doctors were to perform an operation on the other woman, which is performed, for example, in the treatment of a diseased uterus, but can also be used to terminate the pregnancy.

But there was a mix-up and a woman who came for a routine check-up had a miscarriage as a result. “On Monday, March 25, an adverse event occurred at our Gynecology and Obstetrics Clinic. According to findings so far, as a result of a serious violation and non-compliance with internal regulations by the employees concerned, an operation was started on an incorrectly identified patient,” Bulovka’s press spokeswoman Eva Stolejda Libigerová told CNN Prima NEWS.

She added that the affected staff is off duty until the adverse event is evaluated. “In the event that a violation of binding work procedures is discovered as part of the current internal investigation, specific individuals will be held personally liable,” the spokeswoman said.

“It is a very unfortunate incident. There should be an internal investigation and if there was misconduct, the culprit should be punished,” Shadow Health Minister Kamal Farhan (YES) told CNN Prima NEWS.

According to him, if misconduct is proven, the hospital should compensate the mother. “However, no one can replace the loss that the mother experienced with financial means,” Farhan pointed out. According to him, doctors who make mistakes must feel despair and unhappiness. “No doctor can be happy about that. It’s an unfortunate incident,” he added.

“The first patient, who was pregnant, came for a routine check-up, the second patient came for curettage. Both women are of Asian descent. It is a procedure that is ugly called a scraping. It is performed on women who bleed for a long time or have problems after childbirth and the like. The procedure is performed on a woman who is not pregnant and suffers from gynecological problems. For incomprehensible reasons, they switched the two patients at the clinic and scratched the poor woman’s child,” the source of the Praha IN.cz website described the incident.
