Prague – At Prague’s Wenceslas Square around noon, cardboard caught fire during construction work on the roof, according to information from the fire department on the social https://twitter.com/HasiciPraha/status/1773309412855169520. Thick black smoke could be seen from afar. Petr Kostka, a spokesman for the Evropa Hotel, told ČTK that the material burned during the reconstruction of the building. Paramedics took a man to the hospital who had inhaled fumes from the fire, they said.
Smoke was rising from the area behind the building on the corner of Wenceslas Square and Jindřišská Street, a ČTK reporter found out on the spot. According to Kostka, a local fire broke out during construction work on the roof of the Hotel Evropa, which was being repaired.
“This is a cardboard fire on a new building with an area of ten by 15 meters, at the moment it is not possible to set up a ladder, the intervention is taking place inside the building using breathing techniques,” the firemen wrote before 12:30 p.m. A few minutes later, they said the fire was not spreading. “It is a reinforced concrete roof where construction work was taking place. All persons were evacuated from the building,” they added. According to them, the fire did not spread beyond the affected part of the roof.
Prague paramedics on https://twitter.com/zzshmp/status/1773319842466033803 announced that they had taken custody of a man in his 30s. “After an initial examination, ensuring vital functions, the patient was transported to the hospital,” they added.
The intervention of the firemen closed Jindřišská street to traffic for about an hour, even trams could not pass. The operation of six tram lines was limited, the transport company diverted the trams according to its website.
