The Czech national team will not miss the European Championship in Germany, which takes place from June 14 to July 14 in ten different cities. The most difficult opponent in the group at the EC in Germany is clearly Portugal for us. We will encounter a star selection led by the ageless Cristiano Ronaldo right away in the opening match that will be played in the Red Bull Arena in Leipzig.

Of course, this is not the first time that the Czech representatives meet the Portuguese. Since 1996, we have met a total of five times from the Iberian Peninsula (3x at the European Championship and 2x in the UEFA Nations League). We won only in one case, while we went away defeated in four matches.

The Portuguese team has long been among the biggest favorites in major football tournaments. It is therefore not surprising that from a total of five head-to-head matches we managed to beat the opponent only once.

We are of course referring to the memorable 1996 European Championship in England, in which the Czechs won over Portugal in the quarter-finals (1:0) and later reached the final itself, where they narrowly fell short of Germany (1:2 pp).

Since then, we have not done well against Portugal, as evidenced by four consecutive defeats. The last match between these teams took place at the end of September 2022 in the UEFA Nations League. The Czech Republic performed poorly at home and deservedly lost 0:4.

At the EC in Germany, then us the sixth mutual duel with Portugal awaits. Will we be able to surprise the favorites at the start of the tournament, or will Roberto Martínez’s men confirm their long-term success against us?

We have to move twelve years later for the next fight. This time, the Czech team was not enough against Portugal in the group stage of the European Championship 2008 and lost to them 1:3 in the second match of the tournament. At Euro 2008 we had in the group similar teams to this year (Portugal, Turkey), unfortunately with a total of three points we did not advance from it.

So far, the last meeting with the Portuguese in the European Championship took place in 2012. We advanced from the group, but in the quarter-finals Cristiano Ronaldo gave us a stop signwho decided his team’s progress in the 79th minute with a powerful header.

The next loss to Portugal came in 2022. The Czech national team faced very attractive opponents in the group stage of the UEFA Nations League in the form of Spain, Switzerland and Portugal. We played the first mutual match with the last named team in Lisbon, from which we lost 0:2

The subsequent rematch in Prague took place three months later. The Czech national team performed very poorly and lost biggest loss to Portugal in history (0:4). In the difficult LNU group, the Czechs also burned out overall and took the last fourth place with a gain of four points.

The Czech team’s only success over Portugal – silver at the 1996 EC

The Czech national team experienced its own the biggest international hit of 1996. The national team led by coach Dušan Uhrin Sr. surprised at the European Championship in England and came close to winning silver medals.

In the group stage, our footballers played challenging matches against Germany, Italy and Russia, from which they gained 4 points. Italy had the same points as us after three matches, but our progress was decided by the match we won (2:1).

Then we eliminated Portugal (1:0) in the quarter-finals. So far it’s ours the only victory over an opponent from the Iberian Peninsula.

We were lucky to beat France in the semi-finals. During the 120 minutes, neither team could make a breakthrough, so penalty kicks decided who advanced. The infallibility of the players of both teams in the penalty shootout was interrupted only in the sixth series by Reynald Pedros, whose attempt was brilliantly caught by the goalkeeper Petr Kouba, thus sending our team to the final.

We played the final match at Wembley against favored Germany. The Czechs took the lead in the 59th minute, when Patrik Berger converted the penalty. German striker Oliver Bierhoff managed to equalize in the 73rd minute. The same player made his mark in extra time and his goal brought Germany the title of European champions.

Czech Republic’s highest loss against Portugal – UEFA Nations League 2022/23

Our last showdown with Portugal it didn’t go well at all. In the 2022/23 season, the Czech footballers played a rematch with Portugal in the UEFA Nations League. The first mutual match ended with a two-goal victory for the favorite, which is why most fans expected a similar course in Prague.

Unfortunately, it was filled to the brim. The Portuguese were a significantly better team in the first half and went to the locker room with a score of 2:0. The Czech Republic had a huge opportunity to score in the first 45 minutes of regulation time, but the otherwise infallible Patrik Schick did not convert the penalty kick.

After the break, the game of our representatives was very heated and the Portuguese deservedly scored two more goals. It must be added that the wards of former coach Jaroslav Šilhavý could still be happy for the final score of 0:4.

If we were to show a similar performance against the same team at the EC in Germany, we will not have a chance. For this reason, the last match with Portugal, which ended the highest defeat in historyshould have been a warning sign for our team.
