A new registry could look after calculating blood plasma donors

--

“There are many cases where one person completes several samplings in different places in the Czech Republic in a short period of time. This situation is unacceptable both from the point of view of protecting their health, but also from the point of view of the quality of the material obtained,” stated a group of deputies headed by Tom Philippe (KDU-ČSL) in the amendment to the amendment to the Act on Health Services, which proposes the establishment of the register.

According to the proposal, the database would not be created out of the blue, but would expand the already functioning National Register of persons permanently excluded from donating blood.

In the long term, blood plasma collections are problematic – in private centers, people can get several hundred crowns for one collection.

At least four weeks must elapse between the plasma collection and the standard whole blood collection. It is regulated by the Ordinance on Human Blood. However, only a fortnight is enough between two instrumental plasma samplings. The donor is thus limited only by the fact that he may not give more than twenty-five liters of his blood plasma in a year.

To give you an idea – those interested with a weight of 70 kilograms will collect approximately 800 milliliters of plasma at the center during one visit.

Don’t knock

In addition, the problem is that plasma is exported in large quantities abroad for the production of rare drugs. Around three hundred thousand patients need them. The Czech Republic is one of the four largest producers of blood plasma in the European Union, but only a quarter of the produced plasma remains in the country.

There is no such problem with whole blood sampling. Hospitals, on the other hand, often struggle with a lack of regular donors. No financial reward can be offered for donating blood, people are entitled to a paid day off or a contribution from the insurance company.

There must be a gap of at least two months between two whole blood samples. In a year, men may not donate blood more than five times, women a maximum of four times.

The state will gain an overview

Some circumvent the rule by going to another transfusion station, which does not know that they have recently received a donation. So far, no one has monitored it centrally and it was not possible to punish it, which the deputies want to fix. There would be a new fine of two hundred thousand crowns.

Transfusion stations should also have the obligation to check every donor in advance and take control samples from him. If he doesn’t keep the interval, they won’t take him.

And if they meet the conditions, the medical staff must enter the sample in a new register. The record would only be traceable for half a year, not permanently.

The plan was supported by MPs from across the parties, twenty members of the health committee supported it, only one was against it. The change still needs to be approved by the deputies at the plenary session.

The record holder has already donated blood plasma 114 times
