The Jabloneck Museum of Glass and Bijoux celebrates 120 years and seeks to change its name

--

“For more than half a century, we have been operating nationwide in the field of costume jewelry and glass, since 2003 we have been a state institution. So we would very much like our position to be expressed in the name of the museum,” says the director of the Jablonec institution, Milada Valečková.

Her museum has been trying to change its name for a long time. “I am a supporter of making it clear from the name what can be expected from the institution. It is important for the sake of foreign partners and when establishing foreign cooperation. It is not immediately clear from our name that we are not some small regional museum, but that we are a state museum,” the director explained to Novinkám.

“Our model is German institutions, where a distinction is made between the national museum or museums established by the federal states. We think it will be transparent for visitors and partners of the museum,” added Valečková.

The ministry did not respond

The Ministry of Culture would have to decide on the name change. According to Novinek, however, this plan has no supporters there and the whole matter is left as open without a decision. In response to questions from the editors as to whether or not the ministry would agree to the name change, and why, there was no response from the ministry until the text was published.

The credit for founding the collection of costume jewelry and glass in Jablonec nad Nisou goes to a group of Jablonec entrepreneurs, united in the Industrial Education and Support Association for Jablonec nad Nisou. In 1868, he decided to preserve the results of his work for future generations, eventually resulting in a permanent exhibition, which was opened on April 25, 1904.

To celebrate 120 years, the museum has prepared a number of events. On Wednesday, for example, the figurative sculptures of glass artist Gizela Šabóková will be unveiled in the museum park, and a day later a festive concert will take place in the museum’s extension in the shape of a giant crystal.
