The family of peccaries has grown by two cubs in the Jihlava Zoo

--

Two cubs were born the week before last, but they didn’t really want to go outside in the freezing weather at the time.

“The whole family sticks together, even the older siblings keep an eye on the youngest members,” said Simona Kubičková, head of the garden’s promotion department, looking into the bristling world.

The Jihlava exhibition currently has six pieces: a parent pair, two cubs from 2022 and two current additions.

“Wagner’s peccary is the largest and rarest of the three peccary species. It lives in an extremely hot and dry bushy area in the center of South America, called the Gran Chaco,” described the objects of the garden worker to the grateful observer.

“Here, it moves through thickets of cacti and succulents thanks to its wedge-shaped body and strong, stiff bristles. It has small short legs with tiny sharp hooves. It lives in smaller family herds and is mainly herbivorous,” Kubičková added.

The discovery of live Wagner peccaries in 1972 caused a minor zoological sensation. The species was previously known only from paleontological findings of skeletons, and scientists therefore considered it a long-extinct species.

In the Czech Republic, peccaries can still be seen in the zoo in Prague.
