For three days, they march on Brno like soldiers at the end of the Second World War

--

The journey culminates on Wednesday with a ceremonial entry and a moment of reverence at the Brno Central Cemetery, where the fallen soldiers rest.

“The event is inspired by troop movements at the end of the war. The march was planned on the basis of the materials prepared in the book Osvobození žijní Moravy 1945, the authors of which are Vlastimil Schildberger the elder and the younger,” said the creator of the project, Ivan Vystrčil from the Acaballado association, to Novinkám.

During the campaign on Brno, the public can look forward to battle scenes representing the retreating Wehrmacht and advancing allied troops.

Preparation for the round anniversary

In the villages through which the convoy will pass, the team will organize battle scenes, in which the spectators will be able to watch how the Wehrmacht retreats before the allied troops made up of the Red Army, the Romanian army and, of course, the Czechoslovakians fighting for their homeland.

The route leads from Hrušek to Moravský Žižkov, Morkůvek and further through Vrbice, Kobylí, Borkovany, Těšany, Žatčany, Nesvačilka, Telnice, Sokolnice, Modřice – and ends at the Central Cemetery in Brno.

The trek to Brno will last three days, it is a 90 kilometer long route. The march will be interspersed with battle displays.

The project was created on this year’s 79th anniversary of the end of the Second World War. “This year is a kind of preparation for next year, when we will celebrate 80 years since Czechoslovakia was not only liberated, but also restored, at the cost of enormous loss of life. We are preparing a rich program for this,” added Vystrčil.

The goal will not only entertain the audience, but also educate them about the past.

They honor fallen soldiers and horses

Twelve horsemen in period military costumes will also take part in the campaign, as a reminder that these noble animals died on the battlefields with their riders – literally by the hundreds. Only in the battle of Lanžhot in Břeclavsk, which started the liberation of Moravia, over 2,000 of them perished.

“We will travel through Moravský Písek and then through Morkůvky, where there is not only a memorial to fallen soldiers, but also a monument to fallen horses,” added Vystrčil.

The event is a preparation for next year, when it will take place on a larger scale in view of the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War.

The events of the spring of 1945 undoubtedly belong to the most significant milestones in modern history. At that time, the armies of the Soviet Union, the Kingdom of Romania and the Czechoslovak Corps fought fierce battles with the remnants of the German and Hungarian armies in the south of Moravia. The retreating troops tried to prevent the liberators from entering Bavaria.

Every Moravian village was fought over.
