“The ravages of time have also manifested themselves in the fact that the roof is leaking in several places and it is therefore necessary to redo the roof. Bags fall, sometimes a fragment appeared here, so we realized that the situation needed to be solved,” describes the local parish priest Jan Lukáš.”
The overall reconstruction of the church began last year. In the second stage this year, half of the roof will be repaired.
“The roof is being cleaned of paint, which was probably fireproof there sometime during the Second World War. Now the roofers who patch it up and the plumbers will come in and the roofing will be laid, says carpenter Jaromír Filip.
How much money the work will cost, estimates the curator of the choir, Marek Vraj: “When we started, our original estimate was around 12 million, but over time, because the prices of materials and the price of human labor are constantly rising, today we can already see that we they greatly underestimated it. That means we’re currently seeing somewhere around 18 million.
Olomouc evangelicals plan to finance the repairs from their own resources, from subsidies and also from the proceeds of a public collection. They published details about it on a special website.
“It is very important for us that an active community of religious people gathers here, and also the external appearance of the church, the renewed facade, the renewed roof, will definitely be all the more an invitation to people, for those who have not been here yet, to enter inside,” adds parish priest Jan Lukáš.
The workers should gradually extend the lifespan of the building by Berlin architect Otto Kuhlmann from 1920 for several more decades. The church has been a cultural monument since 2015. People can visit it even now during repairs.
