ČESKOBUDĚJOVICKO – In the future, the South Bohemian Region wants to prepare an extraordinary experience from a visit to a unique natural and technical monument. On Thursday, May 2, the regional councilors therefore approved the announcement of a public competition for the best architectural design of the new operating building, which will be part of the Orta mine. It should offer not only the necessary background, but also become another symbol of the story of the restoration of this unique building, which could welcome the first admirers in four years.

“The mine, in which kaolin was originally mined for the needs of the KOH-I-NOOR Hardtmuth company, has huge tourist potential. It deserves to be saved and admired by the thousands of visitors we want to attract here. And that’s not possible without a quality background,” said First Deputy Governor for Tourism František Talíř, according to whom the architectural competition should include not only the appearance of the operational building, but also parking for visitors and dignified landscaping of the entire area, including connections to cycle paths and tourist routes. “We currently take for granted the fact that the entire area will be completely barrier-free,” Deputy Talíř emphasized.

Those interested can send their proposals until the beginning of August. This was confirmed by Pavel Klíma, the deputy for the area of public procurement, according to whom the date of commissioning is already known. “The expert committee will select the winning proposal in mid-September, and a contract will be signed with the winner by the end of this year. After the necessary project preparations, construction could begin in 2026. If everything goes well, the first visitors to Orů will be able to see it as early as 2028,” said deputy Klíma, according to whom the new operating building, including all related modifications, should cost around fifty million crowns without VAT. “Look forward to a sought-after tourist destination full of crooked corridors with a mysterious atmosphere, which director Zdeněk Troška used when filming the fairy tale The Devil’s Bride,” Deputy Klíma added with a smile.

Orty is a former kaolin mine and a natural monument in the cadastre of the municipalities of Borek, Hosín and Hrdějovice near České Budějovice. It was precisely with these municipalities, the Cave Administration of the Czech Republic and the Regional Development Agency of South Bohemia that the South Bohemian Region signed a memorandum in the past, in which they confirmed their common interest in preparing and making Orty accessible as a tourist and educational area.
