Self-picking of strawberries near Olomouc is approaching. This year in record time

--

Strawberry lovers can slowly start preparing canners and freezers. Popular self-collection will break out in Olomouc-Slavonín soon. This year, due to the extremes of the weather, which caused the rapid onset of vegetation and the flowering of early varieties, it will probably start on a record date.

There should be plenty of strawberries, despite the damage done by the recent frost. The demand for self-picking should be able to be covered even in Skrben, where they do not plan to sell their own strawberries in stands this year.

“We covered three hectares of early varieties against frost. Unfortunately, we did not have time to protect two and a half hectares, mostly older stands. Here, the damage is great,” Jan Dostál, who is one of the largest strawberry growers in the Olomouc region, showed the strawberry trees in different parts of the Slavonin plantation.

He hopes that covered strawberries plus late varieties of strawberries that didn’t suffer such spring freeze damage will sustain him.

“This year we will harvest strawberries from the largest area so far – in total there are seven hectares to be harvested. Thanks to this, it shouldn’t be a problem to cover the demand,” he was looking forward to seeing the promising stands, which look very good even thanks to deep undermining in autumn.

Self-harvesting, for which 100 percent of the harvest is intended in Slavonín, could begin around May 15, i.e. next week. The fruits of six strawberry varieties will be available for collection.

“We will see how quickly the fruits ripen, but it is possible that we will start from mid-May. Between May 15 and 20,” Jan Dostál estimated this year’s start.

“It will be record early. We do not remember such an extreme: after hibernation, we woke up with horror already on February 1, when it was ten degrees above zero. It was twenty degrees before freezing,” he looked back.

The frost also damaged strawberry trees in a popular location in Skrben.

“They came at the least suitable stage, when the strawberries were already in full bloom. However, there will definitely be self-collection! We are canceling stand sales and will focus only on self-collection this year,” said Marcel Špaček to those interested in the popular self-collection.

He estimates the beginning of the harvest at the end of May – in two or three weeks.

“It looked like it was going to be really early this year, but as it froze, it slowed down. It certainly won’t be next week. We are monitoring the development daily, we will update the information. We hope that no more frosts will come,” he noted.

In Skrbeni this year, people will harvest strawberries from seven hectares. The entire crop will be set aside exclusively for self-harvesting.

The price of the fruit will be determined by the growers just before the start of the harvest.

Moving from Slavonín

Strawberries will be harvested for the last time this year on the plots on the outskirts of Slavonín. The grower is moving to nearby Nedvězí, a part of Olomouc.

“It’s an interesting location. We have better ground there. We would like to raise the quality of strawberries a little further,” added Jan Dostál.
