They called them toys. A pair of Australians sexually abused hundreds of children, one of whom worked at a nursery school

--

A pair of men who were in a relationship at the time of the crimes were arrested by the police in June 2020, The Guardian writes. The older of the men, who is in his thirties, worked at the nursery where the pair looked for their victims. A court in Sydney sentenced him to 37 years in prison, with the possibility of parole after 26 years at the earliest, 26 years was given to his co-offender, five years younger, who can be paroled at the earliest after 16 years.

The couple pleaded guilty to hundreds of cases of serious sexual abuse of children, including the violent rape of very young children, as early as March 2022. Specifically, the older of the men was found guilty of 248 cases, including 195 sexual acts with 27 different children. The younger man then committed 106 crimes against seven children, some of whom were his relatives.

Dehumanization of victims

Judge Sarah Hopkins said the men followed a predatory and ongoing pattern of dehumanizing their victims as “playthings”. The duration and seriousness of their crimes, she said, led her to ignore their relatively young ages when sentencing, which she said must reflect the community’s “contempt” for such acts and the need to deter them. This mainly concerns the younger of the pair of perpetrators, who was still a teenager at the time of some of the crimes.

The older of the men was employed at a kindergarten in June 2017, after which he took hundreds of photos and videos of the children there, some of them lifting their clothes. The abuse of the nursery school children was revealed when one of the boys complained to his parents that the man kissed him on the lips and liked to “look at his butt”. The perpetrator was subsequently banned from working with children and in education, and in January 2019 he left the kindergarten.

After the arrest of the two men, the police found hundreds of thousands of child abuse videos in their possession. The older of the men admitted that he shared the captured materials on the Internet and that he cooperated with a network of like-minded individuals, the extent of which remains unknown.

Australian Police Chief of Investigations Kate Ferry said the men’s arrest revealed one of the worst cases Australia had ever seen. “The criminal behavior of these two men is perhaps the most disturbing representation of what child sex offenders are capable of. This is the systematic sexual abuse of children over many years across geographical locations by people who have been entrusted with so much responsibility,” she said.

They were also abused in childhood

Both convicts said they themselves had been sexually abused as children. In addition, the elder of the men was the victim of extreme humiliation, which was allegedly filmed and shared on the Internet. The man also expressed remorse for his actions. “I confused love, care, trust and affection with abuse,” he wrote in a letter to the court.

Judge Hopkins said she noted his remorse but it did not affect her decision. According to forensic experts, the older man shows signs of narcissism, pedophilia and empathy disorders and is at high risk of recidivism. So not only should he never have access to children again, but he is probably also a good candidate for anti-libido therapy, or “chemical castration.”

Both convicts are currently in protective custody because they were allegedly sexually and physically assaulted in prison.
