The ceremonial unveiling of the restored statue called Mother with Child was planned for the first day of May in Karolinka in Horní Vsack. In addition, a time capsule with a number of artefacts is placed under the statue, which decorates the city’s restored public park near the former glassworks. It also contains a secret message from the famous Wallachian academic painter Ilji Hartinger and his wife.

The stone sculpture is the work of the prominent stone sculptor Břetislav Benda. It was first placed in Karolinka between 1949 and 1951 and has not undergone any maintenance or restoration since then. Restoration of the statue cost the town hall more than 160,000 crowns.
The management of the city of Karolinka also connected its unveiling with the official launch of the new fountain, which was installed in the park last fall. “We have prepared a small but dignified opening ceremony,” commented the mayor of Karolinka Libor Ptáček about the event.
He revealed that under the statue is a time capsule that was stored there in the past days. Inside there are period artefacts and a legacy from the present day of the town of Karolinka.

“We put in it a daily newspaper, photographs, coins, the flag of our city, a glass plaque, documents for the reconstruction of the park, handmade glasses from a local glass factory and, of course, Wallachian penicillin, i.e. a bottle of slivovica,” the councilor and representative of the local cultural association Vlastimil listed the contents of the box Rapant.
The painter’s secret message
We cannot forget the message from the academic painter Ilija Hartinger and his wife, which is also hidden in the time capsule.
“However, its content remains a secret for all of us,” noted Vlastimil Rapant.
The time capsule is located in a stainless steel box located in the base of the statue made of exposed concrete. It has a circular floor plan.
“We chose the circular shape to unify all the elements in the park,” explained Rapant.

The management of Karolinka also plans to upgrade the park to Salamon Reich square.
“The residents of our city will be able to vote on the plan through a poll, which they will be able to fill out after the launch of the city’s new website,” Karolinka deputy mayor Oldřich Škorňák added earlier.
