Today, in various places across the Czech Republic, people will commemorate the 79th anniversary of the end of World War II. The traditional memorial service with the participation of the highest representatives of the state will take place from 10:00 a.m. at the National Monument in Prague’s Vítkov. Two hours later, at Prague Castle, President Petr Pavel appoints new generals.

The memorial service in Vítkov will be attended by Pavel, who will give a speech, as well as Prime Minister Petr Fiala, Minister of Defense Jana Černochová, Prague Mayor Bohuslav Svoboda (all ODS), Chief of the General Staff Karel Řehka. The event will also include a flyover of airplanes and helicopters of the Army Air Forces.

The President of the Senate Miloš Vystrčil (ODS) and Prime Minister Fiala will attend the appointment of the generals at the Castle. The director of the Security Information Service (BIS) Michal Koudelka could be promoted from the rank of brigadier general to major general after a year, the director of the General Inspection of Security Forces (GIBS) Vít Hendrych should become a brigadier general.

The government also proposed to Pavlo to promote the retired former director of Military Intelligence (VZ) Jiří Růžek to the rank of brigadier general, and four other professional soldiers should receive the rank of brigadier general. Minister of the Interior Vít Rakušan (STAN) proposed to promote to the post of brigadier general the head of the operations center of the police presidium, František Habada, the director of the Special Activities Unit of the police, Milan Černek, the director of the South Moravian Fire Department, Jiří Pelikán, the commander of the Prague Castle Fire Protection Department, Radek Stránský, and the former director of the Office for Foreign Relations and information from Petr Zeman.

Commemorative events on the occasion of the 79th anniversary of the end of the Second World War will also be held, for example, in Brno, Pardubice, Havlíčková Brod or Liberec. In Hranice, there will be a ceremonial entry of Czech and American army units. Senate President Vystrčil and Prague Mayor Svoboda will also take part in a memorial service to honor the memory of the victors over Nazism at Prague’s Olšan Cemetery.

Tonight, the Straka Academy, i.e. the seat of the Czech government, will be ceremonially lit up in the Czech tricolor.
