It is rare that someone asks the court to put them behind bars. The wife of former Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran Khan is the exception that proves the rule. He has good reasons for this.

On Wednesday, a Pakistani court granted her request and ordered the authorities to move her to a prison instead of the house arrest she was in for security reasons, Reuters writes.

Bushra Bibi will be moved to Adyala prison in the garrison city of Rawalpindi, where 71-year-old Khan, a former cricket superstar, is serving his 14-year sentence. Until now, she was imprisoned in Banigal, the headquarters of the founder of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on the outskirts of Islamabad.

During the court hearing, the Adiala prison administration opposed her transfer. They fear that the prison’s overcrowding poses a security threat to the former first lady, the Dawn server writes. But Bibi claims that she was served contaminated food in the house that temporarily became her civilian prison.

More about the former prime minister’s case:

The police came for Bibi on January 31 of this year. This happened shortly after a court sentenced her and Khan to 14 years in prison for corruption. Although her original charges were dropped by the court, she is still serving her sentence for her “un-Islamic” marriage with Khan, writes the Deccan Herald.

The former cricketer has been convicted on at least four occasions since Khan was ousted from office in a 2022 vote of no-confidence by parliament. For example, he faces a ten-year prison sentence for divulging state secrets. He was allegedly supposed to have committed this together with former foreign minister Shah Mehmood Kureš.
