The bidding process for carriers for the operation of electric rail units is scheduled to start this year.

The South Moravian region could be the second region in the Czech Republic where battery electric units (BEMUs) will start operating. In these weeks, representatives of the region began to negotiate with manufacturers of railway equipment about what vehicles they are able to offer for operation in the region. However, the region does not want to buy them, only to find out the possible parameters for their delivery through a competition for carriers.

The so-called preliminary market consultations were announced by the region last year, negotiations with the region were confirmed to Zdopravy.cz by representatives of various producers who were contacted. While the Moravian-Silesian Region, which is to be the first region with BEMU at the end of this year, followed the path of not addressing the parameters in any way before concluding the contract with Czech Railways, the South Moravian Region is following the path of a more detailed market analysis. The region plans to have 34 such units in the region with an option for another 9.

The region has not indicated which manufacturers have participated in the meeting so far. “Most of the major European manufacturers are participating in preliminary market consultations,” said regional spokeswoman Helena Ondřejová.

According to the previously published plan, the so-called electric rail units should run on five lines. The region deliberately chose the lines that are on the list of those that the Railway Administration plans to partially electrify. It concerns the connection Brno – Třebíč (line S4, electrification runs to Zastávka u Brno), Brno – Miroslav (line S41), Brno – Veselí nad Moravou – Staré Město u Uherského Hradiště (lines S6, R56) and Bzenec – Moravský Písek (line S61).

The region expects to issue a tender for carriers for these lines this year. Unlike the purchase of Moravia units, however, BEMU will not take ownership. “Information gleaned from preliminary market consultations will be used in the bidding process for carriers,” added Ondřejová.
