The Czech Republic is a country in Eastern Europe. At least that’s what a look at the average hourly wage says. While the EU average is 24 euros per hour (roughly 600 crowns), according to Eurostat statistics, the average Czech earns 13.6 euros (approximately 340 crowns) in sixty minutes. From Western countries, we can only compare with Portugal (13.7 euros) and Malta (14 euros).

If the country is compared to Eastern Europe, it has reason to be happy – our hourly wage is the highest in the East. Overall, they earn the most for the same amount of time in Luxembourg, on the other hand, the average Bulgarian does not take home even 10 euros after an hour of work.

However, it is not good to compare wages in absolute terms. There are different prices across Europe. The so-called purchasing power parity describes the situation better. An indicator expressing the number of units for which the same amount of services and products can be bought on the market.

However, even changing the indicator will not significantly help – the Czech Republic is once again a bridge between the richer West and the poorer East.

How the Czech wage developed

But the situation is gradually improving, domestic wages are rising. In the last twenty years alone, the minimum has increased more than two and a half times. So-called guaranteed wages also rose. “The guaranteed wage is the lowest possible wage with regard to the complexity, responsibility and effort of the work performed,” explains Tomáš Pavlíček from the Prace.cz portal. “The more complex and responsible the job, the higher the guaranteed salary.”

The professions are thus divided into eight groups, each with a different guaranteed salary. The lowest guaranteed wage for the first group of jobs is then the same as the minimum wage. The increase was mainly recorded in less complex and responsible jobs, or the first and second groups.

“Guaranteed wages have also increased in the third group, which includes masonry, plumbing, plumbing and heating work, as well as handling cash in cash registers or professional barber or hairdressing work,” adds Pavlíček. “In this case, the reward increased from 19,700 to 21,300 crowns.
