Masaryk Square in Uherské Hradiště is hit by an “earthquake”, its power is shown by the exhibition of the winning proposal to transform the city’s core into a former Jesuit college. However, people have the opportunity to view the remaining ten ideas of architects who participated in the urban-architectural competition.

The exhibition is the target of the city’s residents. “It’s certainly nice that the city disclosed all proposals to the public, not just the winning one. They are all similar in many ways, the winning proposal does not tear my veins apart, I just see the problem in the reduction of parking capacities, which are already completely insufficient in the city center today,” confided Tomáš Kopřiva from Uherské Hradiště.

Eleven submitted proposals for the urban-architectural competition were assessed by representatives of the city, architects, experts in transport, heritage conservation or archaeology. The jury, in which independent experts had the majority of the votes, sent four to the second stage to subsequently select the work of a team of authors from the Brno studio Ofschem architekti. “Even before we start the actual implementation, we have to develop and refine the proposal with a team of archaeologists, preservationists, experts on transport and greenery in a historical environment. The procedure must also be consulted with the organizers of social, cultural and sports events on the square. And we also expect comments from citizens and the public,” pointed out Stanislav Blaha, the mayor of Uherské Hradiště.

Masaryk Square was last significantly transformed in 1957, and the necessary reconstruction has been talked about loudly for years. In 2008, during the celebrations of 750 years since its foundation, the city presented a 3D study with pomp, but the implementation was buried by the absence of a suitable subsidy title. The fresh proposal in a nutshell drives cars out of the square, adds a water feature and turns Nádražní Street into a pedestrian zone. The only access road will remain Poštovní street. The number of parking spaces will be reduced from the current 86 to 20.

The exhibition will last until June 27.
