A healthy woman miscarried at the Bulovka hospital due to a mix-up of patients

Prague – A healthy pregnant woman who came for a routine check-up miscarried at Prague’s Bulovka University Hospital on Monday due to a mix-up of patients. According to CNN Prima News, both women were foreigners who live permanently in the Czech Republic. When asked by ČTK, the Ministry of Health said that it considers the event to be an inexcusable failure of the human factor. The hospital has apologized to the family and is ready to provide compensation to the patient, the culprits have already been suspended, said ministry spokesman Ondřej Jakob. The Prague police also started looking into the case.

“The Ministry of Health was informed by the director of the hospital and the head of the gynecology-obstetrics clinic about the adverse event that happened at the Bulovka University Hospital on March 25 of this year. The Ministry of Health expresses its deep regret to the patient and the entire family. There was an inexcusable failure of the human factor and the culprits they are put out of service. We will continue to be informed by FN Bulovka about the next steps towards the employees who made a mistake, and we will resolve the situation,” said Jakob.

According to CNN Prima News, the pregnant woman went to Bulovka for a routine check-up, while the doctors were supposed to perform a procedure on the other woman, a so-called curettage, which is performed, for example, in the treatment of a diseased uterus, but can also be used to terminate a pregnancy. However, the two patients were confused and the pregnant woman who came for a check-up had a miscarriage as a result.

“According to the findings so far, as a result of a serious violation and non-compliance with internal regulations by the employees concerned, an operation was started on an incorrectly identified patient,” Bulovka spokeswoman Eva Stolejda Libigerová told CNN Prima News.

The staff responsible for the mix-up is off duty, the hospital is investigating the incident. “In the event of a violation of binding work procedures as part of the current internal investigation, specific individuals will be held personally liable,” the spokeswoman added.

The circumstances of the incident are also being investigated by the police. “Until now, we have not received any notification in this matter, but based on the information published in the media, we started to deal with the whole matter on our own initiative,” Prague police spokeswoman Eva Kropáčová told ČTK today.
