Police said in a social media post on Friday that they had contacted the hospital as part of the investigation, but had not yet been able to contact either of the women. After the appeal was published, the legal representative of one of the women contacted the police, and the police subsequently opened criminal proceedings on suspicion of the crime of negligent bodily harm.
CNN Prima News reported on the tragic confusion on Friday. While the pregnant woman went for a routine check-up, the doctors were supposed to perform a professional procedure, the so-called curettage, which is done in case of uterine disease. It is also used to artificially terminate a pregnancy.
But the two patients were confused and the pregnant woman miscarried as a result. The hospital has apologized to the family and is ready to provide appropriate compensation, according to a spokesperson for the Ministry of Health. “The Ministry of Health expresses its deep regret to the patient and the entire family. There was an inexcusable failure of the human factor, and the culprits are removed from service,” department spokesman Ondřej Jakob told Novinkám.
A hospital spokeswoman said the fatal mix-up was due to a serious breach and non-compliance.
