Ice cream has never been more expensive in Croatia, locals complain

--

Croats, and perhaps even some tourists, will probably find other refreshments instead of ice cream during the summer heat this year. According to the Dnevno.hr server, the reason is its price.

While last year a scoop was sold in Croatia for an average of three euros (roughly CZK 75), this year in tourist-attractive locations, such as the center of Split, it already costs 3.90 euros (98.10 crowns).

“I think that with the transition to the euro, ice cream became more expensive than anything else. That was last year. But it seems that it continues this year,” Mario from Split told Dnevnik.hr. “I haven’t had ice cream yet this year,” he complained. “I just won’t give the money for it,” he declared.

In the pastry shop in Stradun street in Dubrovnik, a kopeček costs four euros (101 CZK) already.

Is Croatia tempting you as a place for a summer vacation this year?

A total of 5199 readers voted.

“Yes, maybe it’s more expensive, but it’s delicious, and we’re here for a long weekend and we’re not going to skimp,” a tourist from Britain, who introduced himself as Alty, told the Dnevnik.hr website that he was taking a three-scoop cone from the pastry shop.

Survey: a penny for a euro

In the Italian Venice, according to the server, a scoop of ice cream already costs 4.50 euros (113.20 CZK) on average. “We will catch up with them soon,” stated the Croatian website, recalling that last August at the Beach Bar in the resort town of Barbariga in Istria, he cost a then record seven euros (CZK 176).

But Croatians have their own ideas about the price of frozen sweets. According to a survey by the Dnevnik.hr portal, 91 percent of them consider one euro (25 CZK) to be an acceptable price for a scoop of ice cream, five percent are willing to pay no more than two euros (50 CZK) and the remaining four percent three euros (75 CZK) or more.
