The Czech Hydrometeorological Institute (ČHMÚ) announced this on Facebook on Sunday morning. His models did not count on the arrival of dust. It reaches us from the southwest, originally from the northwestern regions of the Sahara.

“This time, it is in high and middle clouds that are significantly more extensive and massive than numerical models predicted. The presence of dust in the clouds may affect (reduce) today’s maximum temperatures,” the meteorologists wrote.

Saharan dust dampens the sun’s rays. When there is an increased amount of dust particles in the air, meteorologists recommend avoiding heavy physical exertion, especially for children and the elderly and people with chronic respiratory problems.

The problems are repeated this year

Sand dust enters the atmosphere during storms over the Sahara. It is a process of so-called deflation. “It is a phenomenon in which the wind lifts and carries away fine particles of sand from the surface of the desert – mostly from the Sahara, but often from other world deserts – and is particularly common in arid regions,” states the Czech Geological Service on its website.

Thanks to the force of the wind, sand dust can then reach Europe or neighboring African states.

It is not the first time this year that the weather in the Czech Republic is affected by inflated Saharan dust. This was already happening at the end of February, and at the beginning of April there was so much dust that meteorologists declared a smog situation in several regions. Back then, the dust lowered the temperature by several degrees and could also affect the performance of solar power plants when the sand covered the panels.

A few days ago, for example, even Athens, Greece, had to deal with blown desert sand, which was covered in an orange haze by the dust. According to local meteorologists, it was the most intense dust situation since 2018.
