A tragic accident involving a FlixBus bus took place on a highway near Leipzig, Germany, on Wednesday morning. Five people did not survive it, more than twenty other passengers were injured. The world media, led by the BBC, reported on the accident.
The accident happened around 10 a.m., after which the bus ended up on its side on the busy A9 highway. Police told the media that no other vehicle was involved in the incident. The bus left Berlin with two drivers and 53 passengers and was headed for Zurich, Switzerland via Nuremberg.
“The exact circumstances of the incident are not yet known,” FlixBus, which has been operating as a carrier since 2011 and operates long-distance bus services in Europe, America and Asia, said in a statement. The company added that its thoughts are with the families of the victims.
Emergency services, including a large number of ambulances and rescue helicopters, responded to the scene. Nearby hospitals were on alert for the tragedy. The freeway was closed in both directions, with law enforcement officials expecting cleanup efforts to last into the evening.
