Maybe the early spring and mild weather is to blame, maybe drivers are finally starting to pay more attention. What is certain, however, is that the number of victims of traffic accidents was a quarter lower year-on-year in March. The most tragic day of March was the last, Easter Sunday.
Last year, 34 people died in accidents in March, nine less than this year (25). And the number of seriously injured also fell. Last year there were 104, this year the number is much more favorable, the police register 79 seriously injured people. It is precisely March that brought the first year-on-year decrease in the number of accident victims this year. There were 40 deaths in January, the same as in January 2023, and in February the number of deaths increased by one compared to last February to 28.
But March could have been much better in terms of accidents, deaths and injuries. In the end, however, Easter was very unfavorably recorded in the statistics, especially on the last day of March, when four people died. “Shortly after midnight, one person died in Brno when a car drove off the road to a construction site and crashed into a crosswalk. A forty-eight-year-old driver died in Pardubice when he crashed into a fence at low speed. In the evening, an 18-year-old female driver of a car died after hitting a tree on the road between Pobežovice and Mnichov in Domažlicko. The fourth victim was a motorcyclist who collided with a car in the Havlíčkobrod region in the evening on the I/34 road between the municipalities of Jitkov and Ždírec nad Doubravou. ČTK described the police data. A total of seven people died during this year’s Easter holidays.
And although the calm and spring weather may have had a positive effect on accidents, the police also perceives negative effects. The sun also brought motorcyclists onto the roads a little earlier. And there were quite a few of them among the March victims. Motorcyclists should be aware that the asphalt is still cold, in many places there is moisture and still winter sprinkler material.
