Unfortunately, these roads are often among the most dangerous, last year four riders on two wheels lost their lives and 12 people were seriously injured, statistically it was one of the worst years for motorcyclists.

According to regional police spokesman Vojtěch Robovský, motorcyclists most often break down three sections in the Liberec region. One of them is road I/35, i.e. the backbone route connecting Turnov, Hodkovice nad Mohelkou, Liberec, Chrastava and continuing to Žitava. “Motorcyclist accidents also often happen on the I/10 road from Turnov to Tanvald,” said Robovský. And then there is the I/9 road from Česká Lípa via Nový Bor towards the German border.

In general, men between the ages of 45 and 54 crashed most often last year, mostly in corners, and alcohol played a role in only a fraction of the accidents. Among the causes of severe motorcyclists’ traffic accidents was usually excessive speed, while minor injuries were often caused by failure to yield the right of way and generally the wrong way of driving.

According to statistics from recent years, only two seasons were worse for motorcyclists. In 2018, 6 motorcyclists died and 25 were seriously injured. 2012 brought 5 dead and 34 seriously injured. This year, the motorcycle season started earlier, similar to other spring activities, thanks to the high temperatures, and the police have already dealt with eight motorcycle accidents. “Among the main reasons for motorcycle traffic accidents, we can traditionally include excessive speed and the wrong way of driving, while other aspects include failure to give way or wrong overtaking,” the police spokesman emphasized again.
