The airport expects the start of work on the extension of Terminal 2 at the turn of 2027 and 2028.

By signing the contract, Prague Airport concluded a tender for the project of a large extension of Terminal 2, which will effectively be the size of a new terminal. The contract was won by the association of companies Valbek, CMC architects, ra15 and D3A. This follows from the contract published in the register. According to an earlier announcement by the head of the airport, Jiří Pos, the British group Arup is to be one of the subcontractors.

The airport started the preparation of new terminal capacities after the approval of the sole shareholder, which is the Ministry of Finance, last year. The expansion of Terminal 2, which will include, among other things, eight new contact stands for wide-body aircraft (or possibly be used for 16 narrow-body aircraft), will cost, according to today’s assumptions, 22 billion crowns. The costs will be specified during the processing of the project documentation.

“In the initial design phase, we will discuss the specific needs of our partners, which are primarily airlines, handling companies, foreign police or customs officials. Absolute priority will then be the passenger check-in process, we assume that by the time the terminal opens, self-service modes and CT technology will dominate X-rays. We will also focus on retail,” he recently told the newspaper Zdopravy.cz Pos.

He expects the start of work on the extension of Terminal 2 at the turn of 2027 and 2028, and it could be completed in 2033. The terminal should then serve based carriers for flights in and outside the Schengen area and all carriers from countries outside the Schengen area.

According to Pose, the airport needs new capacity. “The long-term sustainable capacity of the existing terminals is roughly 17 million passengers per year, which we have already exceeded in 2019,” said the manager. In the mentioned year, a record 17.8 million people passed through the airport. “It is not so much about the total volume of passengers in a given year, the critical indicator is throughput during peak hours,” added Pos.

Earlier, the airport also presented the completion of Terminal 1 for approximately 1.5 billion crowns. Among other things, there will be a central security control. Once completed, Terminal 1, which today serves non-Schengen flights, will serve non-based carriers for post-Schengen flights.
