Ultimately, Greece will also provide Ukraine with the Patriot system

Athens reassessed its position, among other things, after the United States guaranteed it unspecified assistance against any threat from Turkey. Washington was also supposed to guarantee Greece that it would receive compensation for every damaged Patriot system, the website Pronews wrote.

The Financial Times recently wrote about the international pressure on Greece and Spain in this context. “At a summit in Brussels last week, European leaders directly appealed to the Prime Ministers of Spain and Greece, Pedro Sánchez and Kyriakos Mitsotakis, to donate air defense systems to Ukraine,” this paper wrote at the time.

The first American weapons will reach the Ukrainian battlefield within a week after the approval of the aid, the newspaper writes

“The two leaders, whose armed forces have more than a dozen Patriot systems and others such as the S-300, have been told that their needs are not as great as Ukraine’s and that they face no immediate threats,” the newspaper added.

Ukraine now faces intensified Russian attacks ahead of an expected delivery of new Western aid to Kiev. The American Congress recently approved a package of international aid, which includes the provision of supplies worth 61 billion dollars (1.4 trillion crowns) to Ukraine, after several months of delay by the House of Representatives. Air defense systems will probably be part of the American aid. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy welcomed Washington’s help and said at the NATO-Ukraine Council meeting last week that European countries could do even more.
