The road is already over 2,500 kilometers long. It runs along the west coast of Ireland, i.e. around the famous Cliffs of Moher near the city of Galway, and ends on the Inishowen peninsula, reports the Independent. In Northern Ireland, they also have the scenic Causeway Coastal Route, which starts in Londonderry on the border and goes to Belfast, as part of a new project the two routes could be combined into one.

Discussions are currently underway between the two parties, the aim is to transfer some projects to Northern Ireland and thus attract more visitors from overseas – there are currently no transatlantic routes to Northern Ireland. “We are working on a version where we connect the Wild Atlantic Way to the Causeway Coastal Route, but we would also like to connect Ireland’s Hidden Heartlands with County Fermanagh,” said Northern Ireland Finance Minister Conor Murphy.

He added that the Wild Atlantic Way brand is strong and has brought prosperity to the people who live near it. Tourism revenue has increased considerably thanks to the road. “We have a unique opportunity to widen and extend the route from Donegal to Derry and connect it to the Causeway Coastal Route,” added Murphy.

Cliffs, lighthouses and villages

According to the minister, absolutely everyone would prosper from such an expansion. “It makes no sense for such a successful brand to end at the border when we can multiply its benefits for everyone. We should try to offer a complete tourist product instead of competing with each other,” says the minister.

The Wild Atlantic Way is one of the longest scenic drives in the world. It starts in the south of Ireland near Cork, runs along the west coast and ends in Derry. According to the official website, the attraction attracts countless natural beauties, as well as picturesque villages. Highlights include the Cliffs of Moher or the Fanan Head area with its white lighthouse.
