The Mona Lisa is apparently moving. He is to get a separate room in the Louvre

--

The intention was confirmed by the director of the Louvre, Laurence Des Cars. “As far as I’m concerned, I’m in favor and I think a lot of other people are of the same opinion. We are thinking about it,” she said in an interview with France Inter radio station when asked if the Mona Lisa aka La Gioconda deserves a separate room.

According to the director, the management of the Louvre is already conducting relevant consultations with the Ministry of Culture. “It is always frustrating when the conditions for presenting a work of art are not ideal. And this is the case with the Mona Lisa, so we are thinking about how to improve the situation in cooperation with the Ministry of Culture. In my opinion, it is necessary,” added Des Carsová.

The Mona Lisa can be seen in the largest hall of the Louvre, the representative Salle des États. Along with it, the room also houses works by the great Venetian masters from the 16th century, including the museum’s largest painting, The Wedding at Cana by Paolo Veronese.

An average of 20,000 visitors come to see Mona Lisa’s mysterious smile every day. The painting is placed in a case made of bulletproof glass. This January, the work became the target of two environmental extremists, who threw soup at it and shouted slogans about “healthy food” and sustainable development. But they did not damage the image.

The Mona Lisa was painted by da Vinci in the early 16th century during a stay in Florence. He took it with him when he fled Rome to France in 1516.
