Why men with beards are more attractive

Although the photo of a slightly tanned Mark Zuckerberg, which was commented on by, for example, actress Gwyneth Paltrow, was computer edited, it caused an extensive discussion on the networks on the topic of how a beard can increase a man’s attractiveness.

Actress Christal Luster, for example, said she rejected some men while dating, but reassessed their attractiveness after they grew a beard.

“Before they looked like teenagers, but when they grew beards, I reconsidered the situation. It is a nice addition to a beautiful face. Beards make men look more mature,” she told the Huffington Post.

“This is not surprising, given that testosterone levels are related to both dominance and facial hair growth,” says Rob Brooks, a professor of evolution at the University of New South Wales in Sydney.

In a study published in May 2016 in the journal Evolution & Human Behavior, Professor Brooks and his co-author also found that women prefer men with beards and thick stubble when looking for long-term partners and judging men’s fathering abilities.

Compared to their clean-shaven “brethren”, bearded men were rated higher on more traditional alpha traits – overall they were seen as “more masculine, socially dominant and aggressive”.

The women rated beards that looked like ten-day-old stubble as the most attractive. On the contrary, the beard was not a success among women. It probably has to do with the issue of hygiene. The longer the beard, the more parasites they can hide. A 2019 Swiss study even found that men’s beards contain more harmful bacteria than dog fur.

What about gay preferences? The results are no different there either. In fact, a study conducted by Dixson with men and women from Brazil and the Czech Republic showed that gay men prefer men with beards much more than straight women do.
