The BBC has been verifying the authenticity of this document for several months from various sources. She also contacted the Iranian government and the Revolutionary Guards regarding this leaked text, but did not receive a response. Iranian authorities have previously said that the girl committed suicide.

Šakaramíová disappeared in September 2022 and her body was found less than two weeks later. She was last seen in the center of Tehran, where according to one video recordingfrom social media during the demonstrations she also burned her hijab in protest.

With this scarf, a Muslim woman is supposed to cover her hair and cleavage, and women in Iran have been required to wear it in public since the Islamic revolution of 1979.

The case of the young Iranian woman motivated other women and girls to voice their opposition to the strict rules. An investigation into her death was also demanded by people at demonstrations elsewhere in the world, for example in London.

Demonstrations in Iran broke out in mid-September 2022, initially due to the suppression of the rights of women and girls, and later grew into the largest demonstrations against the authoritarian regime since 1979.

They were sparked by the death of a young Iranian woman of Kurdish origin, Mahsa Aminiova, after she was arrested by the morality police for what she said was a hijab that was too loose. According to the police, the woman suffered a heart attack, according to her family and other sources, she died as a result of police brutality.

The Iranian government cracked down heavily on the demonstrations, with over 500 people killed and nearly 20,000 arrested, according to NGOs. Many were sentenced to prison terms, ten of them were executed.
