Fiala: We must discourage illegal migrants from coming to Europe at all

--

On Wednesday, the representatives of the EU states confirmed the agreement on the final form of the package, the Czech Republic abstained.

Hungary and Poland voted against the package. The approved position of the bloc states is final, the new migration and asylum rules will only be formally approved by the Union ministers at the beginning of next week.

“We must discourage illegal migrants from coming to Europe in the first place. The solution is a more rigorous asylum procedure even before entering the EU territory, faster returns outside the EU territory, but also other measures, the proposals of which we are now preparing. The Czech Republic co-founded a group of countries that want to deal with illegal migration really strongly,” said Fiala.

Interior Minister Vít Rakušan said on Wednesday that the resulting package is more bureaucratic and weakens the mandatory border procedure compared to the original proposal. But it is an important first step towards an effective solution to illegal migration. According to him, it introduces mandatory detention, screening of migrants and sets the obligations of member countries.

But the Czech Republic wants to go even further in protecting the European space and is actively working on subsequent steps, said the Austrian. “Together with Denmark, Austria, the Netherlands and other countries, we are preparing concrete proposals on how to solve asylum procedures already in third countries, measures against smugglers and improving returns,” he added.

Babiš: They betrayed Czech citizens

“The whole thing was caused by Fial’s government and especially by Vít Rakušan during the Czech presidency (in the second half of 2022), when they prepared the whole thing and invited migrants to Europe,” wrote ČTK Babiš. “The fact that they delayed now does not matter at all in the end, they should have been against like the entire V4,” he said. Hungary and Poland failed to convince other states to form a blocking minority together. Slovakia rejected two parts of the pact, and abstained from the rest.

“They betrayed the Czech citizens and now we need to succeed in the European elections in order to change that,” added former Prime Minister Babiš. Elections to the European Parliament are held in about a month.

Tomio Okamura, the chairman of the SPD opposition movement, called it another betrayal of the republic by the government coalition of five. “Instead of voting against, they abstained as an alibi. The SPD movement does not want any African and Islamic migrants here, we will not respect the migration pact, and if we are in the next government, we will reopen the migration pact on European soil and reject it,” he said.

According to the Deputy Prime Minister and the chairman of the Pirates coalition, Ivan Bartoš, migration represents a challenge that Europe must deal with and find a common solution. “However, the pact does not bring a fundamental solution and a move forward, rather more bureaucracy, even though there is an effort for a common approach. That’s why even our MEPs didn’t support the majority,” he said.

According to him, the package does not solve, for example, the long periods during which people wait in refugee camps for a decision, on the contrary, it extends them. “But that doesn’t help anyone – the risk of radicalization increases, it’s more expensive for European citizens, and the refugees themselves suffer needlessly in inhospitable conditions,” he says.

According to Bartoš, the emphasis on European cooperation, prevention of migration on the spot, humanitarian aid and the fight against organized crime is important for the Pirates. “Not populist screams and hate-mongering,” he said. His party is pushing for workable rules, including faster returns and tighter controls.

“We reject quotas and redistribution. We can realize solidarity and assistance to other states through financial aid and cooperation in the protection of the common border,” added the Deputy Prime Minister.

Among other things, the series of standards envisages more effective checks on migrants and the faster return of unsuccessful asylum seekers to their countries of origin. It also introduces the principle that those countries of the Union that are overloaded with migration pressure will be helped by others in solidarity, either by taking over part of the migrants from them, or by supporting them financially or materially.
