In the fight for the title, three electric cars competed, but also in other categories, however, purely electric cars dominated.
We have already learned the results of the European Car of the Year 2024 poll, and now the culmination of this year’s World Car Awards and thus the election of the World Car of the Year 2024 (WCOTY) is coming. Based on a jury of 100 motoring journalists from all over the world, the last three finalists were recently formed. However, only one car could take the overall victory.
The winner of this year’s survey is the Kia EV9 electric SUV. Another pair of electric cars – Volvo EX30 and BYD Seal – fought for the title until the last moment. In any case, the vaunted Kia not only won the main title of the poll, it also won in the category of world electric car of the year. After all, the EV9 is getting awards wherever it can. A few weeks ago, the SUV also shone in the all-female poll Cars of the Year 2024.
The Kia EV9 thus confirms the supremacy of electric cars in the WCOTY survey for the fourth time in a row. The main title was won in previous years by the Hyundai Ioniq 6 (2023), Hyundai Ioniq 5 (2022) and Volkswagen ID.4 (2021). In the separate category of electric cars this year, by the way, Kia fought for victory not only with the Volvo EX30, but also with the BMW i5.
The winners were announced at the New York Auto Show. In order for a given car to even qualify for the WCOTY poll, at least 10,000 units must be produced in a series per year, in key markets it must be priced below the luxury car segment, and in the period from January 1, 2023 to March 30, 2024, it must be on sale in at least two key markets (USA, Europe, China, India, South Korea, Japan and Latin America).
Traditionally, cars were also awarded in other accompanying categories. Among the luxury cars, the new generation BMW 5/i5 series shined, and from the sports/performance cars, another electric car excelled – the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N. The Volvo EX30 finally won the award for the best city car of the year, while the award for the best design this year went to the Toyota Prius. Adrian Newey, a well-known British engineer from the world of Formula 1, received the Motoring Personality of the Year title.
