Eggs do not belong in the fridge under any circumstances. Put them in this place and they will stay fresh for years

--

Eggs are a common part of our diets, but storing them properly can sometimes be a challenge, especially if we are looking for ways to keep them fresh without using a refrigerator. There are several traditional and modern methods that allow us to keep eggs fresh for a long time.

Historical storage methods

Traditional methods of egg storage, such as placing in lime or water glass, were used long before the invention of refrigerators. These methods consist in creating a protective barrier around the eggs that prevents the penetration of air and bacteria. Water glass, which is a sodium silicate solution, provides protection for the eggs and allows them to be stored for up to a year.

Modern alternatives

Today’s egg storage methods offer a simple and accessible solution for their long-term preservation:

  • Egg freezing: This method involves cracking the eggs and placing them in ice cube trays or muffin tins without the shells. Frozen eggs will keep for several months and are suitable for cooking and baking after thawing, although they are not recommended for recipes that require beating the whites.
  • Storage in grain layers: Eggs stored in layers of wheat or other grains stay fresh thanks to the grain’s insulating properties, which absorb moisture and prevent bacterial growth.

The importance of proper storage

Storing eggs properly is key to keeping them fresh and safe. It is important to keep eggs in a cool, dry place and protect them from contamination. Whatever storage method you choose, it is important to ensure that the eggs are clean and undamaged.

Although storing eggs in the refrigerator is the most common method, there are effective alternatives that can help keep them fresher for longer, even if you decide to buy a larger quantity. With rising prices and fluctuations in the egg market, these methods can be not only economical, but also practical for anyone who wants to have quality eggs on hand all year round.
