A six-year-old girl ran into a burning house to wake up her sleeping mother and siblings

Six-year-old Olivia Patterson, from the English village of Riccall in North Yorkshire, was playing outside with a friend on the afternoon of Thursday, April 4, when she noticed flames and smoke coming from the roof of her house and the house next door.

She didn’t hesitate for a moment and ran inside to warn her mother and her two younger siblings who were enjoying a few moments of afternoon nap after lunch. “Get out, get out, the house is on fire,” Olivia yelled.

She later described to the BBC that she didn’t know what to think about the fire, so she simply went to tell her mother, Laura. She later clarified that when she woke up, Olivia immediately reminded her to take the other two children out.

“I couldn’t believe she ran in there. Neighbors later said they tried to stop Olivia, but she knew we were inside,” Laura Patterson described.

After a while, four fire engines arrived at the scene and the fire was soon extinguished. However, Olivia Patterson’s family had to move into alternative accommodation until the cause of the fire, the extent of the damage and the necessary repairs could be carried out.

“I’m so glad it happened during the day because our fire alarm failed,” says Laura Patterson on the bright side. And she added the assumption that fire system wires are hardwired in, so they can be damaged without anyone noticing.
