The first two installments of The Elder Scrolls series, Arena and Daggerfall, helped set the standard for open virtual worlds in the mid-1990s. Especially the latter, with its more than 160 thousand square kilometers, remains to this day one of the largest games you can visit.

The graphics are much nicer, but does anyone even have time for such gigantic games these days?

And it looks like their designer duo Ted Peterson and Julian LeFay still care about size, as it’s the first thing they’re promoting on Steam for their upcoming new game The Wayward Realms, which is also supposed to be a first-person fantasy RPG with an emphasis on exploration a unique archipelago kingdom where dozens of different factions fight for influence. With the promised size, it’s clear that developers will have to rely on procedural generation methods, but the images released so far don’t look bad at all.

Even though the development is already in an advanced stage and they even promise an early release date on Steam, the developers will still try to ask fans for a financial contribution through the Kickstarter portal. The campaign will be launched during May, you can follow it on this link. So hopefully it will work out.

By the way, you can pass the time until the release with the original games, which are available for free on Steam (see our article)
