--

This year, the capital city of Prague will once again participate in Earth Hour, a global event for nature and climate protection. Through its service company Technology of the City of Prague, which manages the public lighting system in the metropolis, the ceremonial lighting of important Prague monuments will be turned off tonight from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

When several Prague landmarks go dark for one full hour on Saturday, some people may be Googling the reason for the ‘eclipse’. However, I think that most Prague residents are already familiar with Earth Hour. It is a global initiative whose aim is to draw attention to the deteriorating state of the climate and the loss of biodiversity. For Prague, environmental protection is not a marginal topic, it has had a climate plan for several years, which we are gradually fulfilling,” says the deputy for the environment and climate plan Jana Komrsková.

I am pleased that we can also give time to the Earth with this symbolic hour, during which we will turn off the landmarks of Prague, such as the National Theatre, the Old Town Hall or the Dust Gate. Limiting the carbon footprint and unwanted light emissions is a goal we are working on for the long term. We are modernizing Prague’s public lighting system by installing more energy-efficient LED lights with remote control and regulation. Another area is the support for the development of electromobility, where we are building multi-purpose masts that will light the way for the citizens of Prague and at the same time it will be possible to charge electric cars from them.” he said Michal Hroza, councilor City of Prague for the area of infrastructure.

According to the Chairman of the Board of Directors of THMP Tomáš Jílek, a total of five dozen important Prague monuments will go dark on Saturday as part of Earth Hour, which will be “turned off” remotely from the company’s central control room in Prague’s Holešovice with the participation of the Deputy Mayor, Mr. City of Prague for the environment and climate plan of Jana Komrsková and councilor Michal Hroza responsible for city infrastructure.
