At the gala evening on the occasion of Slovakia’s accession to the Union, the Slovak Prime Minister emphasized that the right of veto is the basis of the stability of the European Union. “The right of veto must remain because it is precisely that certain elements of diversity, sovereignty and independence are respected, of course in full respect of the values and principles of the European Union as such,” added Fico.

Fico criticized the European Union in his ceremonial speech. “It is not possible for the Union to immediately respond to the manifestation of sovereignty, independence and self-confidence of an individual state with various attempts to start mechanisms regarding the rule of law and immediately sanction this country because it has a different opinion. We must respect diversity. Otherwise, Europe is entering very complicated times,” said the head of the Slovak government.

On this occasion, Fico also spoke out for peace in Europe. “Slovakia is prescribed in the constitution that it should be a country supporting peace, the European Union was also created as a peace project. With all due respect, if we look at specific projects today, it is far from a peace project,” stated the head of the Slovak government.
