According to a new crime index published by the website Numbeo, France is the least safe country in Europe, closely followed by Belarus and Belgium. On the opposite side of the ranking are small states such as Andorra and Monaco. And how is the Czech Republic doing? Out of 43 evaluated countries, it was ranked 32nd – i.e. among the safer ones. Compared to last year’s ranking, however, it slightly worsened.
Individual European countries were rated according to the crime and safety index. According to data from the website Numbeo, France took the top spot, becoming the least safe country in Europe. Belarus took second place, Belgium took third place. Sweden and the United Kingdom also made it to the infamous top five.
On the other side of the imaginary barricade stands the safest country, led by Andorra. The full name of the Principality of Andorra is a sovereign landlocked state on the Iberian Peninsula bordering France in the north and Spain in the south.

The Numbeo Crime Index is compiled based on survey responses. The questions are about general crime in the country, perception of safety – the feeling of safety of the citizens of a given state day and night, fear of a specific crime such as assault, physical assault, harassment in public and others. They also concern concerns about property crimes, such as theft, and perceptions of violent crime.
This is an estimate of the overall level of crime in a given city or country. Numbeo considers a level below 20 as very low, between 20 and 40 as low, between 40 and 60 as medium, between 60 and 80 as high, and a crime level above 80 as very high. The safety index, on the other hand, is the complete opposite of the crime index. If a city has a high safety index, it is considered very safe.
