Only a fifth of people trust the government, two-thirds are worried about the political situation

CVVM asked selected citizens in a representative survey during the period from the end of January to the first third of March 2024 whether they trust basic constitutional institutions.

Slightly more than half of the citizens (54 percent) expressed confidence in the President, a fifth of the Czech public trusted the government, 20 percent in the Chamber of Deputies, and 32 percent in the Senate.

In the case of councils and governors, trust prevails. Regional councils are trusted by 44 percent of those polled, governors and the mayor of Prague are trusted by 45 percent of the public.

The best results were obtained by municipal councils, or city district councils, and mayors. The share of trust in municipal councils reached 62 percent, and 66 percent in mayors.

Compared to the previous survey from October and November 2023, the evaluation of the institutions did not move significantly, with the exception of the share of distrust in the case of the Senate, which decreased by four percentage points. In particular, the assessment of the government and the House of Representatives remains at a clearly worse level than it was a year ago.

According to the survey, voters of government parties trust the president, the government, the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate, significantly more often. Voters of the ANO, SPD and KSČM movements are significantly more critical of the president, the government, the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate.

Only 10 percent of citizens expressed satisfaction with the current political situation. Dissatisfaction was expressed by 65 percent of those surveyed, of whom 36 percent were “rather dissatisfied” and 29 percent “very dissatisfied”.
